I Can Buy Myself Flowers
“I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours
Say things you don’t understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can.”
(“Flowers,” Miley Cyrus, 2023)*
Miley Cyrus’ song, “Flowers,” seems to be her way of processing her single status following a public and painful divorce from Liam Hemsworth.
In this ballad about rising out of heartbreak, Miley shares her wisdom. While no one wants a breakup, it happens. What Miley reminds us, oh, so well, is that we can be okay! We can practice loving ourselves, and maybe even do it better than that ex-partner.
Many clients tell me they feel worthless and unlovable after a breakup. That when their partner left, the partner took with them our worth and desirability.
Miley and I say not true! We remain lovable! And until we find someone worthy of our love, we can show it to ourselves.
To clarify, this doesn’t mean we want to be alone and single. It means you don’t need a partner to complete you; that you can take real good care of yourself. It makes it easier for us to be independent – enabling us to make a better choice in partners next time around. It wards off us feeling desperate for someone to love us which often leads to poor choices. It allows us to choose someone we want rather than need.
Miley’s song, Flowers, became the fastest record to reach a billion Spotify streams – a testament to just how many gazillion people all over the globe resonated with her message!
